Taking time ....
made a decision when I began the last painting to take more time with my paintings, beacause the ones that take longer, are more satisfying to me personally. So although in a world where bills need to be paid, the temptation is to churn the work out, I find for me resisting that temptation leads to work that is more potent. Less is more ( I hope! )
I've been working a lot with layering paint. Putting patterns on top of patterns, and creating textures with application of colour and different kinds of paintwork. I want to experiment with layers a lot more.
This painting has the feeling of a quilt, part of my "fabrication" series. I have always admired quilting and mosaics, but have come to the sad realisation that I will never be a quilt, or mosaic artist because I can't be bothered lol. My commitment is to paint, and developing in that medium, but it doesn't stop me from borrowing from other art forms and mediums in my work :-)
I like the way quilts have been used traditionally to tell womens stories, and pass on these stories to others. Painting is how I tell my story. I also like the way quilters put together fabrics, and fabric designs that wouldn't usually be found together, but they weave them together with a magic that I love.
it's all part of the "fabric" of society. Throughout history we have used fabrics to express our values, our identity, our heritage and our culture. We use fabrics to express ourselves, to harmonise, and to rebel. I may not be a fabric artist, but I love fabrics, and the way that paint itself can only ever produce a "fabricated" version of reality.

been a while since I had anything new to post...
been working on this painting for the last couple of months, now it is as close as to being finished. It's called "what happens when your world collides with mine"
It's not just about the impact of a lover, although it could be that, but about the powerful transformative impact that happens when our world collides with anothers, and we let ourselves merge and grow through that connection. Sometimes the effect is beautiful and the collision is more like a dance, other times we get broken up for a while by the impact of another beings world on ours. I like the idea of marbles crashing into each other...but I like the viewer to find their own meaning in my paintings, so the impact my world has on you may be different than I planned or expected :-)

Hearts in Motion

Surprised myself by finishing a painting today - and listing it on trademe. I felt a hift in my work lately. After cutting loose and being freer with technique, I'm feel more enjoyment in some of the more laborious aspects of painting and feeling a focus that is free of the conflict that was there before.

house paint heaven
Well, I'm coming and going on whether to sell. I painted the edges of wildcrazy Love today. Strangely, after some doubts before, I'm really liking it today. Like it more the more I look at it. Hope the buyer likes it when they get it. Always hard to really get an accurate impression of a work from a photo.
Anyway have moved from resenes little test pots to bigger dulux ones. Partly because I want to use a lot of paint, and quite thick textural and marble effects. I feel like I can splash it around and experiment and that I don't have to worry too much about the cost. Dulux is about 2x the paint for only a dollar or two more.
Resenes definitely has the best coverage, so you use less to get the same results but dulux is great for playing with.I consider proper "art paints" to be a luxury that as an artist...I can't afford lol But actually I've come to prefer house paints. They flow in a way I like and they are exceptionally hardwearing and long lasting. They're made to take a bit of punishment. :-)
I also bought some pva glue. plan bubbling around in my head is to experiment with dripping, marbling and generally playing with paint on paper, and then cutting shapes out of the (dried) finished results. I feel like a kid at kindy, give me the scissors and the glue lol
